If you are remodeling your home, giving your office a make-over, or just plain tired of your carpet, think before you throw your carpet away.

Think about this; in our country over 5 billion pounds of old carpet end up in our land fills every year. It will take thousands of years for this carpet to decompose. Just take a moment to digest this information and the impact this has on our environment.

What if there was another way?

In fact, there are several options to recycle, reuse, and re-purpose your old carpet.

Sell Your Carpet

There are free listing sites such as Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist that allow you to reach people locally in your area. If your carpet is in decent shape and has been professionally cleaned it will be in high demand for someone and put a little extra money in your pocket.

Donate It

Plenty of organizations are always looking for large ticket items to help those in need. Again, if your carpet is in good shape and has been professionally cleaned it still has value. Another consideration is the animal shelters, even if only parts of your old carpet is re-usable, donate the good pieces. The shelters will be thrilled to give their animals a little comfort.

Reuse It Around Your Home

You can use it as insulation in dog houses, attach it to boxes or stands as scratching and climbing post for cats, cut it into squares or rectangles for indoor and outdoor rugs, and use small pieces as furniture sliders. You can even use pieces in your garden and yard a weed inhibitors under mulch and gravel. I am sure if you give it some thought you may even come up with more clever uses.

Recycle It

Although this may be a little more time consuming, as there are few recycling facilities. Doing your research or making a few phone calls will help in locating the facilities and provide you with options.

Hopefully, you will think before you throw your carpet away. You have options and can be helpful to others.
